This Pamphlet Is An Official United States House Of Representatives Document Issued During The 19th Congress, Second Session, And Printed In Washington In 1827 By Gales & Seaton, Acting Under The Authority Of The War Department. It Contains A Letter From James Barbour, Who Served As Secretary Of War From 1825 To 1828, Transmitting To Congress An Abstract Of The General Annual Returns Of The Militia Of The United States. The Document Was Formally Read And Laid Upon The Table Of The House On February 6, 1827, As Part Of Congress’s Oversight Of National Defense During A Period When The United States Relied Primarily On State-Organized Militias Rather Than A Large Standing Army.
