This 1842 Clipping, Titled “Ruta Bagas For Milch Cows,” Reproduces An Agricultural Article From The New Genesee Farmer, A Farming Publication Associated With Rochester, New York. Dated 1842 And Signed “J.” From Wayne County, The Article Documents A Nineteenth-Century Dairy Farming Experiment Involving The Feeding Of Rutabagas To Milk Cows During Winter. The Unidentified Contributor Reports Feeding A Cow One-Half Bushel Of Rutabagas At A Time, Immediately After Milking, To Prevent The Unpleasant Turnip Flavor Sometimes Found In Milk And Butter. Following Repeated Tastings, Several Individuals Reported That They Could Detect No Turnip Flavor, Leading The Writer To Consider The Experiment Successful. The Article Also Encourages Farmers To Prepare Land For Rutabaga Cultivation Through Manuring, Repeated Harrowing, And Thorough Soil Preparation Before Planting Seeds By The Beginning Of Summer. A Specific Reference To The Rochester Seed Store Documents The Connection Between Agricultural Merchants And Farmers In Western New York. The Writer Further Emphasizes Weed Control, Efficient Farm Labor, And Proper Manure Distribution. This Historical Account Provides Direct Evidence Of Dairy Cattle Feeding Practices, Root Crop Cultivation, Agricultural Experimentation, And The Exchange Of Farming Knowledge In Wayne County And The Rochester Region During The Early 1840s.
