This Original November 23, 1846, Legal And Financial Letter Was Written At Eutaw, Greene County, Alabama, By Attorney William Peter Webb To R. B. Waller, Esquire, At Greensboro, Alabama, Which Was Then Located In Greene County. Webb, An Early Eutaw Lawyer Who Settled There During The Town’s Development As The Greene County Seat, Confirmed His Receipt Of $222.50 In Connection With The Case Of English Et Al. Versus Pickens, Administrator. R. B. Waller Was Addressed With The Professional Title “Esquire,” Reflecting His Standing Within The Legal Or Civic Community At Greensboro. Webb Explained That An Earlier Receipt Had Been Sent Through An Intermediary And Delivered To William C. Oliver, A Eutaw Attorney Who Later Served As Judge Of The Greene County Probate Court. Pickens Appeared In The Case In The Legal Capacity Of Administrator, Indicating His Responsibility For The Estate Of A Deceased Person, While The English Parties Were Listed Collectively As “Et Al.,” Meaning “And Others.” The Letter Records The Movement Of Court-Related Funds, The Need For Written Proof Of Payment, And The Close Professional Connections Among Attorneys, Estate Administrators, Postal Officials, And Local Residents In Antebellum Western Alabama.
