Dated January 23, 1862, This Civil War-Era Business Correspondence Records A Financial Dispute Between Miss Caroline Blackhouse Of White Haven, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, And Mr. Thomas Henry Of New Hope, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Caroline Blackhouse Wrote Concerning An Order Or Claim That She Had Previously Sent To Thomas Henry And Requested Either Action Or Its Return. In His Response, Thomas Henry Referred To P. L. Co., Stating That The Claim Had Been Presented At A Company Meeting And That A Receipt Was Said To Exist As Proof Of Payment. The Letter Shows How Nineteenth-Century Business Matters Relied On Written Orders, Receipts, Claims, And Personal Correspondence To Confirm Payment And Resolve Disputed Accounts.
