The Mob Had Surrounded His Vehicle, Which Held Wilmer Collins, A Black Man Accused Of Attacking Six White Women. Sheriff Logan Swore In Every Mob Member As A Deputy And Claimed It Was Their Duty To Escort The Prisoner To Jail. While The Mob Was Distracted, An Officer Escaped With Collins In A Faster Car To Tampa. This Incident Illustrates The Racial Tensions And The Prevalence Of Lynch Mobs In The Jim Crow South, As Well As A Rare Instance Of Law Enforcement Preventing Vigilante Violence.
