This 1945 Photograph Print Clipping Documents Private Robert Olney Of Waltham, Massachusetts, During The Battle Of Iwo Jima, A Major Pacific Campaign Fought From February To March 1945. The Caption States He Was Buried In His Foxhole When Japanese Forces Detonated Explosives That Collapsed A Ridge. The Photograph Captures Him Digging For His Rifle After Surviving The Blast. Such Images Were Published In American Wartime Media To Highlight Individual Soldier Experiences. The Battle Resulted In Over 26,000 American Casualties And Nearly 19,000 Japanese Dead, Making It One Of The Bloodiest Engagements Of World War II.
