"The Sad Sack" Comic Strip Was Created By Sgt. George Baker During World War II And First Published In Yank, The Army Weekly In 1942. This 1945 Clipping, Titled "Assistance," Shows The Sad Sack Character Struggling With Heavy Crates While Another Soldier Watches. The Strip Was Known For Its Wordless Humor, Using Visual Gags To Depict The Difficulties Of Army Life. George Baker's Work Captured The Frustrations Faced By Soldiers And Became A Popular Form Of Entertainment Among U.S. Troops.
