This German Kriegs Postkarte (War Postcard) Was Produced During The Second World War Under The Authority Of The Deutsches Reich (German Empire). The Card Features Martin Luther With His Birth And Death Dates Printed, Identifying Him As A Central Figure Of The Sixteenth Century Reformation And As The Founder Of The German Written Language. The Inclusion Of A Winterhilfswerk Pre-Printed Postage Stamp Marked Six Plus Four Pfennig Shows That The Card Combined Standard Postal Service With A Mandatory Contribution To The State Run Winter Relief Program.
Winterhilfswerk Was A State Organized Welfare Program Established In Germany In 1933 And Operated Throughout The National Socialist Period. Its Official Purpose Was To Provide Financial And Material Assistance To Civilians Affected By Poverty And Wartime Shortages, Especially During The Winter Months. Funding Was Collected Through Mandatory Surcharges On Postage Stamps, Including The Six Plus Four Pfennig Marking Seen On This Postcard, As Well As Through Organized Donation Drives And Public Collections.
